#7 David Trujillo
Making Bamboo a Mainstream MaterialMedia Detail
Dr David Trujillo has over 25 years’ experience in the structural use of bamboo. His work with bamboo has been both academic (with 50 publications in the field) and practical, as he has led and fostered the development of ISO standards on the topic.
David currently works as an Assistant Professor at Coventry University within the Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience and also as the Head of Bio-Materials at Atelier One.
David is the head of the UK delegation to ISO Technical Committee 165 Timber Structures and the UK’s designated expert to Working Group 12 – Bamboo Structures from the same committee.
In this masterclass, David Trujillo discusses the fascinating potential of bamboo as a sustainable structural material. Discover how its over 1,600 species worldwide offer a renewable and fast-growing alternative for construction. Explore how its impressive mechanical properties equate it with high-strength concrete and hardwoods, making it suitable for structural applications.
Despite its advantages, it faces challenges such as its natural tendency to crack and split, low fire resistance, and durability issues when exposed to the elements.
However, it’s exciting to see how standards like ISO 22156 are being developed to address these challenges and ensure its proper use in construction.
