This report, Beyond the Roadmap, presents an in-depth framework for the Danish building industry to transition beyond current reductionist approaches to sustainability. Moving past traditional emissions targets, the roadmap addresses the urgent need for regenerative practices that respect both safe and just planetary boundaries. Drawing from updated climate science, systemic foresight, and the Doughnut Economics model, this document highlights the limitations of mere “net-zero” goals, advocating instead for a shift towards a holistic, restorative approach that harmonises economic activity with ecological stability.

The report discusses key challenges: the overshoot of planetary boundaries, the inadequacies of relative reduction targets, and the critical need for aligning the industry’s practices with an absolute carbon budget. Through strategies like the “Butterfly Framework,” it underscores pathways for the building sector to reduce consumption, enhance biogenic materials, and ultimately drive regenerative impacts. By fostering collective action across policy, industry, and community sectors, Beyond the Roadmap aims to catalyse a robust, transformative response to the polycrisis of climate change, overconsumption, and ecological imbalance, setting a model that other industries and nations may follow.
