The Welsh Government faces a critical challenge in decarbonising 1.4 million homes to meet its net zero targets by 2050. Residential buildings currently account for 20% of Wales’ demand-side greenhouse gas emissions.

A new Route Map, prepared by the Decarbonisation of Existing Homes Implementation Group, outlines actionable strategies to eliminate these emissions. This document advocates for creating an “enabling environment” where decarbonisation is accessible, cost-effective, and desirable. Key solutions include streamlining retrofit processes, increasing access to funding, and supporting homeowners with reliable advice. By addressing embodied carbon, improving data collection, and fostering innovation in supply chains, this initiative aims to transform residential emissions.
