Can Lis- Utzon’s Hidden Masterpiece is now available for university and institutional screenings

News Detail

The wait is over: Can Lis is now available

For more than a year, one question has reached our inbox again and again: “Where can we watch Can Lis?”

It has come from universities and schools of architecture in many different countries, from lecturers who wanted to show the film to their students, from architects and designers, and from people with no connection to architecture at all, who had seen the trailer, read about the film or heard about it at a festival, and simply wanted to see it. Until now, our answer was always the same: not yet.

Today, we can finally say yes.

A film that has travelled the world

Since its premiere at the Utzon Center in Denmark, Can Lis – Utzon’s Hidden Masterpiece has been selected and recognised at international film festivals, most recently winning the Environmental Film award at the London Art Film Awards 2026 (read more). Its festival journey continues, but the interest it has generated has made one thing clear: it is time for this film to reach everyone who has been waiting to see it.

The documentary tells the story of Can Lis, the house Jørn Utzon, architect of the Sydney Opera House, built for his family on the coast of Mallorca after leaving Sydney. It is a journey through Utzon’s life and thinking: his youth in Denmark, his years in Australia, his travels around the world and his passion for sailing, and how all of it came together in a home of timeless beauty, rooted in its landscape and built with local materials. Built 50 years ago, Can Lis is more relevant than ever in an age of climate change and scarce resources and invites us to rethink how we build for the future.

The film is guided by Piers Taylor, award-winning architect and founder of Invisible Studio, with extensive experience in broadcasting for the BBC and Netflix, and Francisco Cifuentes, Mallorcan architect, full professor of architecture and resources at ETH Zurich and one of the foremost experts on Can Lis. Together they explore how Utzon created a home in harmony with its surroundings, with deep respect for the island’s landscape and its local materials. The film also features a special collaboration with Line Nørskov Davenport, architect, curator and Exhibition Director of the Utzon Center in Denmark, and one of the world’s leading specialists on Utzon’s life, travels and work, who reveals how his journeys shaped his thinking.

The film is directed by Juan Alberto Morillas, architect and founder of Share Your Green Design, who brings together design and storytelling to celebrate the convergence of art, nature and architecture. Its original soundtrack is by Juan Cruz-Guevara, Spanish composer and winner of the Premio Reina Sofía de Composición Musical, whose music creates a sonic landscape that forges a deep connection between architecture, design and sound.

“This beautiful documentary was for me a revelation: spectacular insights into the siting, design and materiality of Can Lis.”
— Owen Lewis, Emeritus Professor of Architectural Science, University College Dublin
