Geopolymer cement and concrete: Properties

N.B. Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Sarita Rai

Portland cement manufacture is highly energy intensive and emits CO2 and other greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. Production of Portland cement and consumption of concrete is continuously increasing. This will lead the mission of higher amount of CO2 gas. In order to protect environment alternatives are required.

Geopolymer is one of the most important alternatives to Portland cement but cannot replace completely. Any waste material containing aluminosilicate mineral such as Fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag, rice husk ash, clay, etc. when treated with alkali solutions give geopolymer cement. This cement when cured at a temperature develops high strength and can be used for various applications. Synthetic method, properties and applications have been discussed and reviewed.
