Embodied Carbon Classification Scheme for Concrete

Arup
2023

There is currently no shared definition of ‘low carbon’ or more appropriately, ‘lower carbon’ concrete within the UK concrete industry. This report introduces an A-G classification scheme for the embodied carbon of concrete that is applicable to all normal weight concrete mixes, regardless of how they are produced or used. This scheme will enable both technical and non-technical experts across the value chain, from designers and contractors to manufacturers and project owners, to make informed decisions when specifying, procuring, and using concrete. It can also be used for setting embodied carbon targets for market interventions, to accelerate the development of the market for lower carbon concrete.
