Intro

Metabolic is looking for an experienced researcher who is enthusiastic to join and participate within a multistakeholder program aimed at accelerating the transition to Net Zero for cities throughout Europe.  This program falls under the NetZeroCities Mission and deals with a complex subject matter as well as a vast group of very different stakeholders. This asks for excellent communication and research skills and confidence and drive to deliver the program in collaboration with all organisations involved.

About Metabolic Institute

The Metabolic Institute is a non-profit think tank, working at the intersection of academic research and real-world experimentation. The Metabolic Institute advances knowledge on how human activities influence Earth systems. Our work is driven by open-source knowledge generation to provide actionable insights for collective systems change. We identify critical knowledge gaps and foster collaborative partnerships at the interface of academia, industry, and society. We co-develop methodologies, models, and frameworks for the assessment and implementation of systemic solutions.

The multi-disciplinary research team works across a range of topics, including: circular cities and regions, industrial ecology, sustainable value chains (e.g. built environment, textiles, agrifood, energy, plastics), environmental monitoring and evaluation, circular entrepreneurship, and impact finance. About the Position

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Researcher to join our NetZeroCities team within the Metabolic Institute. Netzerocities is a 34-member consortium launched as part of the European Green Deal and is directly linked to the European Commission Mission for 100 Climate-neutral and Smart Cities by 2030. The position is based at our office in Amsterdam. It is a full time position, with a start date as soon as possible. You will report directly to the Program manager and the Institute Director.

Skills, Capabilities and Responsibilities 

We are looking for an impact data-driven researcher who is experienced in sustainability research and stakeholder management to join our Institute. Your role will be twofold. Firstly, supporting the data analysis across multiple city-level impact assessment initiatives. Secondly, stakeholder management, whereby you will gather pioneering insights from research and city partner networks to support Climate City Contract Action Plans and data driven portal development designed to share learnings and insights to the wider NetZeroCities Consortium and partners.

Your work will include data analytics in the broad sense of the definition, ranging from method development, to data collection, processing, analysis, visualisation in static and interactive forms, and to creation of actionable insights. Next to the technical aspects of data analytics, one of your main challenges will be to communicate your data-driven insights in a way that successfully influences action with and within our partner cities. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Supporting your colleagues with ongoing research projects
  2. Performing your own independent research and presenting it to the team
  3. Writing up reports and supporting deliverables for large multi-partner projects
  4. Contributing to team sessions by providing your insight, knowledge and opinion to research discussions

Your Profile

You are an autonomous self-starter eager to understand, learn and provide assessment and analysis around the challenges and requirements for cities to transition towards Net-Zero by 2030. You are excited to contribute your creativity, problem-solving and scientific rigour towards the challenge of how to support Cities, and their stakeholder networks, to manage sustainability and environmental topics to reduce a cities impacts. You like working in teams both internally and externally and feel comfortable to be able to coordinate activities and your personal time management and project task delivery.

Requirements 

  • A strong academic background, with a graduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline or strong relevant working experience
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience with sustainable innovation and data analysis (5-10 years of relevant work experience)
    • Skilled in Data Analysis and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) of impact indicators (e.g. GHG, Scope 3).
    • Knowledge of circular economy, sustainable innovation, urban sustainability initiatives, environmental impact analysis, and systems thinking
    • Experience in the field(s) and understanding of city innovation & planning processes, NetZero Policy, Econometrics, or Environmental impact assessment processes. Knowledge concerning the bioeconomy and biodiversity is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, other languages are also a plus
  • For non-EU/EEA applicants: The role is dependent upon having or obtaining a visa to live and work in the Netherlands. Metabolic is a recognised visa sponsor and may support the successful candidate’s application for a work visa
