The project:

The Head of Sustainability shall be accountable to the Client Project Director for leading the sustainability agenda on the programme, working with all of the client’s directorate functions to identify and realise opportunities for the programme to be more sustainable, efficient and innovative.
The Head of Sustainability will be responsible for establishing and leading the Sustainability function within the client’s directorate and working cross-functionally and with contractor(s) / consultants to capture market-leading sustainable solutions that are innovative and remain efficient throughout the lifecycle.
This person will be responsible for the establishment of the sustainability, efficiency and innovation performance metrics based on programme objectives using relevant global benchmarks and leading practice while also providing support in overseeing the design and implementation of the performance measurement framework to enable the programme to achieve or outperform those targets.
The successful candidate will be part of the Mace Responsible Business global practice team, delivering client-facing consultancy services including the advisory, management and coordination of various climate change, sustainability and/or social value-related activities on projects and/or programmes. The role may also be required to support work winning. It will proactively support Mace’s wider corporate ambitions on sustainability to reduce client carbon emissions, generate value to society, and increase biodiversity net gain.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Leading the Sustainability function which shall require driving the sustainability, efficiency, and innovation agenda across the programme and implementing the Project Sustainability Plan, to ensure it achieves the minimum sustainability targets and meets the objectives set by TII within the plan and best-in-class performance against relevant global benchmarks, while also achieving value for money.
  • Periodically review the Project Sustainability Plan established by the client, providing input and updates where necessary and leading the further development as the programme progresses.
  • Providing an interface into the wider client corporate organisation in relation to the progression of the programme Sustainability Plan to ensure that the programme is aligned with the client’s latest policies and procedures.
  • Provide the client directorate with reach-back to their wider organisation to bring fresh perspectives from other jurisdictions and other major projects.
  • Provide input into the development of procurement documents and contracts as well as the evaluation of the submissions for the Major Infrastructure Contracts, ensuring that sustainability targets and actions are included under the requirements for the Major Infrastructure Contracts and evaluate the responses and proposals put forward by the contractor(s)
  • Oversee the Major Infrastructure Contracts to ensure that they implement their proposals and ensure they meet the targets set out in the procurement, in collaboration with the Project Delivery Partner
  • Drive the technical implementation and application of policies and procedures set out in the Project Sustainability Plan across the project, ensuring alignment with the wider client’s Sustainability Agenda throughout the life of the project
  • Be responsible for reporting to regulators and authorities regarding any requirements and controls that the client is required to comply with, such as those contained within the Railway Order, ensuring that all sustainability-related obligations are adhered to throughout the delivery and lifespan of the programme.
  • Support the Project management Office in the development of initiative-led forecasts and efficiency management strategies and support execution/course correction to achieve targets within the Sustainability Plan including:
  • Development of the efficiency and innovation framework, including the development of standard operating procedures demonstrating the client’s values.
  • Cross-functional working to identify, define and baseline areas (e.g., carbon emissions, social inclusion, biodiversity etc.) within the scheme allowing for a focus on output to realise the desired outcome
  • Support with regular and accurate reporting of performance, relating to how efficiencies are measured and reported to the client and other stakeholders.
  • Support in the management of the following relationships as they relate to sustainability, efficiency and innovation: Core Contractor(s), Project Delivery Partner, and relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Embed a culture of collaboration across the aforementioned parties and develop sustainability-related incentives which all parties should benefit from when achieved.
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring that KPIs and Key Milestones as established with the PMO function are met.
  • Engage colleagues, suppliers and the client in environment and sustainability issues through appropriate communication mechanisms. Devise, develop and deliver relevant sustainability training to support the achievement of project deliverables and upskill colleagues, clients and supply chain partners.
  • Ensure sustainability is embedded in the supply chain by supporting the procurement process through appropriate review and challenge during tendering and post tender activities.
  • Common purchasing and partnerships – drive business efficiency by working with internal stakeholders to develop standardised purchasing processes and partnerships.
  • Support the drive for the client partner to be regarded as an exemplar delivery partner in sustainability. Be a vocal champion of environment and sustainability on the project.
  • Represent the client partner and the project at relevant internal and external meetings.
  • Support internal and external assurance processes to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with other HSEQ personnel to coordinate activities and programmes to maximise business benefits and minimise impacts on delivery.
  • Carry out regular inspections of work programmes. Proactively identify environmental non-conformance and close out using software tools provided. Ensure corrective actions taken address root causes to prevent recurrence.
  • Input to risk management processes.
  • Liaise with project teams to ensure adequate procedures are established within functions and are implemented.
  • Produce reports, meeting minutes and presentation material as required.
  • Support corporate environmental and sustainability activities and initiatives such as knowledge sharing and volunteering.

You’ll need to have:

  • Substantial construction industry experience, including 5+ years experience of embedding sustainability and efficiency into high-value metro- rail projects or projects of similar scale and complexity.
  • Degree educated in a relevant environmental or science subject (Minimum Level 8, or equivalent)
  • Experience in project, contractor, stakeholder engagement or delivering employment & skills requirements
  • Experience in developing, and/or implementing environmental management systems on projects
  • Associate or higher-level member of IEMA or similar professional body.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of construction environmental management & sustainability)
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in one or more relevant sustainability topics (Waste, carbon/energy, responsible sourcing, water, biodiversity.
  • Be able to translate technical topics into layperson language and articulate the value of sustainability.

You’ll also have:

  • Chartered Environmentalist.
  • Previous practical experience in the following sectors would be beneficial: Infrastructure (e.g., rail, highways, aviation, defence, energy, utilities, nuclear)
  • Level 9 Masters in a relevant field would be advantageous.
  • ISSSP, PMI, APM or equivalent would be advantageous.
