Our UK Building Design practice is looking to recruit an experienced Embodied Carbon Lead to join our growing team of dedicated Building Design sustainability and carbon professionals and work with our clients at the corporate, strategic and project level to drive carbon strategies and the transition to Net Zero. This is an excellent technical leadership role for a candidate with proven experience, looking to progress their career to the next level through working on high profile projects throughout the UK. We are looking to recruit a knowledgeable and skilled individual with experience in delivering consultancy services for building design including: embodied carbon calculations for structural, architectural and building services components, provision of technical advice and guidance in sustainable materials and components selection, including keeping informed of the latest developments in sustainable materials and components applicable to UK projects and providing advice to project design teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a diverse team of project delivery consultants to provide technical sustainability support to clients with regards to embodied carbon assessments, sustainable materials and carbon reduction interventions.
  • Liaise with project directors/managers/technical leads/research & innovation team responsible for new-build and retrofit projects across central and local government, and other project promoters.
  • Work across multi-disciplinary teams including developing strategies and providing technical advice and support.
  • Knowledgeable of UK Government policy and other industry initiatives that relate to sustainable developments.
  • Generate good working relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Bid preparation, budgetary, project and team management/mentoring responsibilities.

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will be educated to degree/higher degree level in one of the following: construction materials/architecture/structures/sustainability/environment/ climate change/carbon management/related disciplines and will have achieved chartered status and/or full or fellow membership of a recognised relevant professional body. You will possess strong carbon and net-zero related expertise; a wide range of skill sets and a willingness to become involved in a broad selection of projects.
  • Good working knowledge of carbon accounting tools/life cycle assessment software, such as OneClickLCA is essential.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and experience working collaboratively with a range of technical specialists at different levels.
  • Be highly self-motivated, possessing strong enthusiasm and commitment to delivering sustainable outcomes.
  • Be flexible, adaptable and prepared to take on new challenges and work from other Atkins or client office locations.
  • Have strong report writing, communication and presentation skills.
  • Have experience of UK climate change, carbon and net zero regulations, guidance and standards. Knowledge of international regulatory frameworks, guidance and standards would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of standards and methods for assessing and reporting on carbon performance of building design projects
  • Excellent verbal communicator with the ability to present to a wide range of audiences and communicate technical concepts simply and clearly
  • Excellent writing skills – clarity in scientific writing is key. Able to adapt writing style to produce documents for different types of audience, including non-specialists.

Reporting structure:

The Embodied Carbon Lead is a national role, reporting into the Building Design Sustainability Leads (Elisabeth Montgomerie and Karen Turnbull) who are based in London.
