We are currently looking for an experienced environmental consultant who brings expertise in the environmental scope (feasibility, impact assessment, permitting, monitoring) of energy projects in Spain. The focus of the role is to support the growth of our environmental business in Spain and our environment and social local team in Madrid, as well as contributing to the successful delivery of energy projects across Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The role is based in Madrid, although other locations in Spain could be considered.

This is a permanent role and will offer excellent prospects for career development involving different power generation technologies, with focus on energy projects from development and construction to operations.
Our clients include project developers and owners, international lenders (including multilateral development and private banks) and governments.
Although the focus is primarily in the energy sector, our environmental and social team occasionally also works on water, transport, and other types of internationally financed infrastructure projects – this role will require cross-sectoral work and collaboration across the Mott MacDonald Group.
We are currently looking for an experienced environmental consultant who brings expertise in the environmental scope (feasibility, impact assessment, permitting, monitoring) of energy projects in Spain.
You would be part of a truly international and multidisciplinary team, working alongside some of the best environmental specialists, social specialists and engineers in the industry. Reporting to the Environmental and Social Team Leader in Spain, your responsibilities will include:

  • Advise on the Spanish environmental and overall permitting regulatory framework, requirements and stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and review of environmental impact assessment (EIA) of energy projects in Spain.
  • Assess and review environmental and social permits and understand their importance for the development and construction of the projects (“Declaración de Impacto Ambiental” or “Environmental Impact Statement”, hydrography or “Conferencias Hidrográficas”, archaeology, cattle roads or “Vías Pecuarias”, forestry or “Montes de Utilidad Pública”, urban planning or “Compatibilidad Urbanística”, etc).
  • Support with business development activities including identification of new opportunities, meeting with clients and preparing proposals.
  • Perform environmental monitoring duties during construction and operation phases of projects, undertaking site visits in Spain and internationally.
  • Work closely with our engineering colleagues to ensure environmental aspects are properly considered during all project phases.
  • Participate in environmental and social due diligence (ESDD) and international environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) assignments as consultant and project manager, within the context of international project finance and transactions.
  • Develop or review environmental and social management plans (ESMP), environmental monitoring plans (“Plan de Vigilancia Ambiental” in Spain) and environmental and social management system (ESMS).
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to address environmental aspects during the projects’ lifetime.

Candidate Specification

Essential criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to environmental management or sustainability.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Able to travel in Spain and internationally.
  • Experience working on energy projects in Spain (environmental permitting, EIA, environmental monitoring).
  • Extensive knowledge of Spanish environmental permitting and regulatory requirements and standards.
  • Experience working closely with engineering specialists.
  • Understanding of the relevant technical aspects of energy projects.
  • Able to meet challenging budgets and timescales.
  • Experience in providing environmental inputs and solutions on complex projects that require analytical skills, conceptual thinking, decisiveness, and customer focus.
  • Experience of authoring complex technical reports.
  • Previous roles working as part of a team and independently as required.

Desirable criteria

  • Master’s qualification in a discipline related to environmental management or sustainability.
  • Experience in carrying out ESIA, ESDD reviews, and construction an operations monitoring for energy projects such as solar, hydro, wind, and thermal generation technologies against international standards (i.e.: International Finance Corporation Performance Standards, World Bank Environmental and Social Framework and Environmental Health and Safety Guidelines, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Environmental and Social Policy).
  • Relevant work experience in environmental management disciplines including the European Union Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (EU CSRD) requirements (i.e.: sustainability-related disclosure requirements, double materiality analysis).
  • Experience in working on environmental constraints mapping and site selection based on environmental aspects/baseline.
  • Experience in reviewing environmental clauses in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) tenders and assisting in EPC contractor selection.
  • Experience in managing projects, work planning, resource allocation, financial/budget management.
  • Experience in business development and writing proposals (aptitude in identification, progression, delivery, and success in tendering for new project opportunities).
  • Experience in developing and managing client relationships and winning new work.
  • Experience in reviewing noise and shadow flicker models and assessment/reports and identify environmental and community health and safety risks and impacts based on the results.
  • A high standard in an environmental specialism and a broader awareness of other environmental or social disciplines
  • Health and safety qualification.
  • Fluency or work proficiency in French (i.e.: ability to work at site, participate in meetings, review documents, write reports in French).
  • Based in our Madrid office
