Meta designs, builds, leases and operates the most innovative and efficient data centers in the world. Developing, operating, and managing the data center infrastructure and facilities the “right” way is synonymous with ensuring high uptime, capacity availability, flexibility, and cost efficiency in a safe working environment. Meta evaluates sites around the world for data center development and is seeking an environmental expert to lead and manage environmental due diligence, including environmental permitting and environmental impact assessments, for site selection efforts. This position will report directly to the Global Manager of the Environment and Water Team within the overall Site Development team. The Environmental Manager will need to think both strategically and analytically, develop solutions, and navigate the challenges that accompany data centre developments. Comprehensive environmental permitting and technical expertise combined with excellent communication, organizational, and program management skills are required for this position. Domestic and international travel is required (up to 20%).

Responsibilities:

  • Manage early environmental due diligence activities across multiple concurrent development efforts, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, noise studies, air permitting, ecological and cultural resource evaluations.
  • Lead detailed Environmental Impact Assessments and the supporting technical studies including noise assessments, air emissions modeling and ecology surveying required.
  • Identify, evaluate and mitigate environmental risks and regulatory changes affecting relevant development projects from initial due diligence through execution and operation.
  • Build strong relationships with permitting and regulatory agencies to successfully deliver permits to allow construction and operation of our data centres. Understand, communicate, and align these permit approvals with Meta development timeframes.
  • Develop, summarize, and communicate environmental obligations across multiple diverse Meta teams, including design, construction, and operations teams.
  • Promote environmental compliance through construction and facility operations, including training, auditing, and maintaining permit compliance.
  • Provide environmental expertise to diverse internal teams and coordinate with other internal stakeholders about relevant issues and requirements, including Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and Sustainability teams, where needed.
  • Develop training and educational tools regarding environmental goals, compliance, and awareness.
  • Stay current on changes in environmental policy and regulations to assess and mitigate risks to the project portfolio.
  • Assist in facilitating the growth of the environmental program within Meta data centers and the wider Infrastructure team as the company continues to grow and build environmental excellence.
  • Partner with internal organizations including capacity planning, energy teams, data center design, construction, network engineering, legal, policy, communications and finance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, planning, or other related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in environmental due diligence and permitting efforts.
  • Comprehensive professional experience in Environmental Impact Assessments and pre-development efforts.
  • Experience managing projects and effectively coordinating with internal staff and external consultants, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience working in teams and establishing and maintaining cross-functional and positive working relationships.
  • Experience working with confidential information.
  • Highly skilled in data management and project management platforms.
  • Experience with air and noise evaluations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, planning, or other related field.
