About you

TransitionZero is launching Future Energy Outlook (FEO), an ambitious, open energy systems planning platform with global coverage. FEO aims to create impact by supporting decarbonisation efforts of non-profit agencies, financiers, investors, and other stakeholders. FEO will use a best-in-class modelling approach to rapidly and flexibly generate long-term modelling analyses that support clear, credible, and actionable insights.

This role involves supporting the development and application of FEO. The role will require applying FEO to case studies of varying scales – national, regional, and global – to generate unique insights. You will have experience in energy systems modelling and techno-economic analyses of national, regional, or global decarbonisation pathways.

Responsibilities:

You will:

  • Develop ‘realistic’ technology and sector representation in FEO

  • Apply FEO to case studies across varying geographical scales – national, regional and global

  • Collect and ensure the quality of techno-economic data quality for FEO

  • Develop unique metrics to assess and analyse modelling results across a range of pathways and scenarios

Skills and Experience:

Essential:

Qualifications:

  • MSc in STEM field, with preference given to degrees in energy systems and related fields

Experience & Knowledge:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in energy systems modelling for medium (2-10 years) and long term (10+ years) planning

  • Knowledge of key energy economic concepts

Skills & Abilities:

  • Programming in languages including Python, R, Julia

  • Energy systems modelling using tools such as OSeMOSYS, PyPSA, TIMES/MARKAL, or MESSAGE

  • Workflow management (AirFlow, SpineOpt, Snakemake etc)

Personal Attributes:

  • Collaborative

Qualifications:

  • PhD in a STEM field, with preference given to degrees in energy systems and related fields

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Experience of working with partners and stakeholders in Asia (especially Southeast Asia) and Africa

  • Familiarity with Python-based pipeline orchestration, either local (Snakemake, Kedro) or container-based (AirFlow, Prefect, Dagster – preferred)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Presentation and communication of model results
